I believe that Billings' family was very important to him. I also believe that John Billings took the blame of his family's death, because he left them home to join the war. In my opinion, Billings felt that it was his duty to protect his family and he failed to do so; therefore, he took the blame and killed himself. Billings' family was the only thing he had. When he discovered his dead family, I believe he felt as if he had died too. The Patriot Resource states, "Billings feels like he has lost everything and gives up by taking his own life." In my opinion, if Billings had other family members, that were alive, he would not have killed himself. There were many other families that the Revolutionary War impacted, in The Patriot. Many men continued to fight even though their family was also murdered; however, John Billings chose to end his life rather than to continue fighting. Although this movie is fictional no one will ever know why John Billings killed himself. However, I believe that Billings' family was his life and his life was gone, so he felt no need to be alive. What do you think? Do you think Billings would still have killed himself if he had other family members alive? What would you do if you were in this type of situation? Personally, I have no idea what I would do if I lost my entire family. I do not know if I would kill myself or continue my life. I do not think anyone knows what they would do unless they are faced with that situation. Everyone has his or her own resolutions to certain problems. For John Billings, his resolution was to kill himself.
